The annual International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship has become a holiday season ritual and is symbolic of our country’s hockey well-being. Fortunately for Canadian hockey fans, Team Canada wins a lot more than it loses - thirteen gold medals and ten more medals overall than the nearest rival, Russia. And in the twenty five years since the Program of Excellence sent our best to the tournament, it has been a launch pad for a lot of future hockey greats. Watch for them in this handpicked solid gold retrospective of classic confrontations, some not seen since their original broadcast.

Games included:

1982 Canada vs USSR

Canada’s National Junior Team’s first major test against the USSR. Played in Winnipeg with highlights of the final and Gold Medal Game played in Rochester Minnesota.

1985 Canada vs Czechoslovakia

Canada’s first Gold won in Europe.

1988 Canada vs USSR

The first meeting of these two teams after the infamous Piestany Tournament

1991 Canada vs USSR

Defenseman John Slaney scored the winning goal to secure Canada’s first Gold at home.

1993 Canada vs Sweden

Canada defeats Sweden after Peter Forsberg guaranteed that Sweden would win.

2005 Canada vs Russia

Thanks to the NHL lockout, Canada had what many consider to be the greatest team ever assembled.
